Opinion | Trump and DeSantis: A Tale of Two Republicans

Opinion | Trump and DeSantis: A Tale of Two Republicans
June 8, 2023

Today, we compare two potential Republican presidential candidates: Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis.

DeSantis made headlines recently by campaigning in Iowa while Trump canceled a rally due to bad weather. The Florida governor even claimed that “Iowa is the Florida of the Midwest.” Although intended as a compliment, it makes one wonder if Iowans would want to be compared to Florida.

DeSantis, his wife, and their three young children enthusiastically support Trump, as evidenced by DeSantis demonstrating his devotion to the president in a campaign ad. Trump, on the other hand, has five children but only one, Ivanka, keeps her distance from the family. Don Jr., who is his father’s son, often appears in the news and posts pictures of his five children. However, the two families are unlikely to socialize, due to personal behavior that sets them apart.

Trump has accused DeSantis of having a shady past that involves high school girls; in contrast, DeSantis signed a bill banning abortions in Florida after six weeks. He has consistently maintained his pro-life stance due to his Catholic beliefs, while Trump has shifted his position based on voters’ opinions. Although Trump appointed three anti-choice judges to the Supreme Court, he claims that many in the pro-life movement found the new Florida law “too harsh.”

DeSantis adheres to a strong, faith-based, pro-gun, and anti-diversity mentality, while opposing inclusion programs in public colleges. He’s currently at odds with Disney over a bill, which prohibits classroom discussions about sexual orientation in early grades, that many believe negatively impacts students’ mental health and wellbeing. It’s hard to imagine Trump taking the same path since his politics are massively pragmatic.

In conclusion, voters have a choice between two Republicans: one with an exemplary family life and longstanding, extremely conservative beliefs or a sleazy candidate who adjusts his position to gain votes and has a dubious personal history. It’s no wonder some days it pays to be a Democrat.
