As we approach this year’s Pride celebrations, the mood is different from previous years. Instead of an air of celebration and progress, there is a sense of urgency and fear. Our L.G.B.T.Q. community is in crisis.

The recent spate of anti-L.G.B.T.Q. laws being passed across the United States has created a state of emergency for our community. These laws, which range from restricting trans youth’s ability to access health care to banning the display of L.G.B.T.Q.-inclusive books in classrooms, are not just attacks on individual freedoms. They are also a signal that homophobia and transphobia are alive and well in our country.

In addition to these legislative assaults, the L.G.B.T.Q. community is also confronting a surge in hate crimes. According to the Human Rights Campaign, at least 28 transgender or gender-nonconforming people have been killed in the United States in 2021. These killings are a tragic reminder that our fight for equality is far from over.

We cannot afford to let our guard down. Our community must come together to push back against this wave of hatred and bigotry. We need allies to support our cause and help us elevate our voices. We need our elected officials to stand up for our rights and protect us from discrimination and violence.

This Pride month, let us use our collective strength to demand change and defend the rights of our L.G.B.T.Q. brothers and sisters. Our future depends on it.
