As Apple has been emphasizing its App Store as a secure source of applications, LastPass has found a problematic app. LastPass reported that a fraudulent program imitating its service, called LassPass with a very similar logo, was removed by Apple. Surprisingly, another app from the same developer remained on the store without any explanation from Apple. LastPass reported this to Apple two days ago and the app was removed on Thursday morning. This move comes as Apple takes steps to promote the App Store as a safe platform amidst increased competition for iOS apps, with Schiller stating the need to address new threats such as hate speech and pornography. LastPass pointed out that the logo and name of the fraudulent app closely resembled its official ones.

The fraudulent app named LassPass allowed users to enter personal information, including passwords, email and home addresses, as well as bank, credit, and debit card data. The app also had a paid registration option. LastPass, upon learning about the app, focused on getting it removed without examining its behavior or activity. As for the other app from the same developer, named PRAJAPATI SAMAJ 42 Gor ABD-GNR, it was described as a “program of the Ahmedabad-Gandhinager Prajapati Samaj” and a “people’s platform.” This app was listed on Google Play but was no longer available at the time of publication. There are no indications that this app violates any App Store rules. All attempts to contact the manufacturer were unsuccessful. Apple representatives did not respond to inquiries about the incident or their review process or policies.
