On my first ever air travel years ago, the airhostess advised, “…if you are traveling with children, make sure that you wear your own mask first, before helping your children…”, I wondered why the child – who needs more assistance – is prioritized lower than the capable adult.
Reflecting on sessions with my leadership coach, Rajiv Vij, author of ‘Inside-Out Leadership’, I’ve come to realize that effective leaders must first take care of themselves. A well-grounded individual is better equipped to lead and care for others, including peers and teams.
Oftentimes, we prioritize bosses, peers, and team members at the expense of our own well-being. This tendency is even more pronounced in women leaders who prioritize both work and familial responsibilities. Unfortunately, self-care is often neglected, and we mistakenly believe that we are doing well by helping others.
The toll of neglecting ourselves and constantly giving to others can be deep. It can leave us questioning our worth, accumulating self-doubt, especially when we have worked hard but haven’t achieved what we aspired to. This can lead to emotional and physical burnout, and even transferring stress to others. Surprisingly, this happens to even the most successful individuals.
Here are five practical strategies for personal growth and leadership excellence. These strategies help us become better individuals and leaders, ensuring that we are well-equipped to lead and guide others.
1. Delegate and coach
Delegation enables individuals to create space for themselves to engage in strategic planning and focus on high-level tasks. This important skill is the foundation of effective leadership, allowing leaders to entrust responsibilities to others and empower them to make informed decisions.
However, it’s important to note that delegation does not mean abdicating or avoiding accountability. In moments of crisis, leaders must step up and take responsibility.
2. Create space for self-reflection and cultivate mindful habits
In the pursuit of effective leadership, it is crucial to value self-reflection and personal growth. In today’s fast-paced world, the constant need to be connected can be overwhelming. Leaders must intentionally set aside time for self-reflection and improvement, refraining from activities that distract from this process.
Nurturing personal growth involves forming new habits and letting go of old ones. For example, replacing screen time with reading books or substituting unhealthy habits with healthier alternatives.
3. Nurture self-compassion and authentic relationships
Constantly comparing oneself to others, especially through social media, can negatively impact mental well-being and self-esteem. Instead, individuals should focus on self-improvement and acceptance. Recognizing one’s unique strengths and accomplishments is essential for building a healthier self-image.
Authentic relationships and self-compassion are crucial for personal growth. As individuals become more at peace with themselves, they can positively influence those around them and build the right team.
4. Take time for downtime
It is important to value and prioritize downtime for overall well-being and stress management. Engage in activities that bring joy and relaxation, such as reading, listening to music, spending time in nature, or pursuing a new hobby. Physical activities like walking, exercising, or practicing yoga can also improve mood and promote health.
Connect with loved ones and give undivided attention to friends and family. Emotional support and a sense of belonging are crucial for well-being. Additionally, ensure that you are getting enough sleep, as it is essential for physical and mental health.
Setting boundaries, even at work, can help prevent burnout and maintain well-being.
5. Schedule time for self-assessment and progress check-ins
Maintaining progress and avoiding reverting to old habits is vital in personal growth. Allocate specific time for self-assessment and check-ins with a partner, reporting manager, or mentor. This helps track personal goals and ensure continued growth and improvement.
Remember, self-improvement is a lifelong journey that empowers us to empower others!
