Former Vice President Mike Pence announced his bid for presidency in Iowa, taking the unprecedented step of disavowing his former boss and rival, Donald Trump. In his speech, Pence condemned Trump’s alleged role in the events of January 6th, commended law enforcement for quelling the violence, and emphasized his commitment to the Constitution. Pence’s use of the word “never” to describe Trump as a suitable presidential candidate made his position closer to that of outspoken Republicans such as Liz Cheney. Although it is a requirement for G.O.P primary candidates to pledge their support for the eventual nominee, Pence promised he would do so, even if it were himself.
Pence also addressed his candidacy’s issues, including his support of a candidate with polarizing views and the growing national debt under Trump-Pence administration. He also emphasized three issues to differentiate himself from Trump: abortion, fiscal conservatism, and foreign policy, stating that Trump has abandoned these issues. Pence vowed to cut spending on Social Security and Medicare to confront the nation’s debt crisis and emphasized the United States’ role as the leader of the free world and an arsenal of democracy in foreign policy.
