Pixel Thermometer Update: Body Temperature Now Requires a US SIM, Cool 8 Pro, and More

Google has introduced an update to the Pixel Thermometer app that now allows users to measure body temperature. This feature is currently only accessible in the US and requires a valid SIM or eSIM from a US carrier. Following the update to version 1.0.597731989, users are required to grant camera permissions to the Pixel Thermometer app, as the body temperature sensor uses the LDAF sensor (laser sensor autofocus). A new “Body temperature” card is displayed under “object temperature” on the home screen, complete with graphics. The initial setup process involves connecting the Fitbit to the Thermometer for temperature recording. Users can make adjustments to settings such as enabling or disabling “Voice assist” and “Temperature guide.” Additionally, users are prompted to select an age range: 3+ years, 3-36 months, or 0-3 months. Prior to measurement, users are advised to remove any devices covering the forehead or temple, including glasses, and to ensure the temples are free of hair. Initiating the temperature measurement is done by tapping “Tap to measure.” The process involves placing the middle of the camera bar near the forehead until a vibration is felt, then moving the Pixel 8 Pro to the left or right temple as guided by a voice prompt for 4 seconds. Recommendations include conducting the measurement indoors, away from direct sunlight, and ensuring the absence of any fan, vent, window, or heat source. Users are also advised to have clean, sweat-free skin and a clean, dirt-free sensor window before testing. Google cautions against using the temperature sensor when it is excessively hot or cold, as this may lead to inaccurate readings. The device should be allowed to rest for 10 minutes to acclimate to room temperature before retesting. If users are transitioning from a different climate, staying in a warm room for 10 minutes before taking the measurement is suggested. Upon completion, users have the option to “Restore” or “Save” the measurement, which is stored in the Thermometer app for 7 days before automatic deletion. In addition, measurement results can be saved to Fitbit on the “Recent results” page, and the Thermometer can be accessed directly from the Fitbit app.
