In an interview, Pope Francis stated that there is a unique resistance to homosexuality in Africa, especially among bishops and others in the continent. He expressed confidence that despite this opposition, critics of his decision to allow blessings for same-sex couples would eventually come to understand it. He mentioned that the recent document Fiducia Supplicans (Supplicating Trust) allowing blessings has sparked intense debate within the Catholic Church, with African bishops showing particularly strong resistance. Francis mentioned that those vehemently protesting belong to small ideological groups and noted that Africans view homosexuality as culturally unacceptable.
He remained hopeful that everyone would be reassured by the spirit of the Fiducia Supplicans declaration, emphasizing that it aims to foster inclusivity rather than division. The Pope acknowledged the significant pushback the document received, highlighting the rejection in Africa, where homosexuality is illegal in some countries, carrying severe penalties.
Francis advised that when giving blessings, priests should consider the context, sensitivities, and the most appropriate ways to conduct such ceremonies. Addressing concerns about potential conservative factions breaking away from the Catholic Church due to his reforms, he dismissed the idea of a schism, attributing such talk to small groups and emphasizing the importance of moving forward.
Turning his attention to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, the Pope asserted that true peace between them would only be achieved through the implementation of a two-state solution. He lamented that the conflict was intensifying.
Francis also mentioned a planned meeting with the president of his native Argentina, Javier Milei, and the possibility of visiting the country, which he has not done since assuming the papacy in 2013. Additionally, he outlined his 2024 agenda, which includes trips to Belgium, East Timor, Papua New Guinea, and Indonesia.
Regarding his health, the 87-year-old acknowledged experiencing some discomfort but asserted that he is presently doing well, despite previous health issues and canceled engagements.
