Google remains active in the smartphone industry, and details about the Pixel Fold 2 are starting to surface. According to Mishaal Rahman of Android Authority, a photo of a “prototype” of the Pixel Fold 2 has been revealed. The new model presents significant changes, particularly in the rear camera. The camera’s design, previously known for its clean and symmetrical layout, appears to have taken a step back. The anticipated Pixel Fold 2 now features a rear panel with a camera notch located in the left corner, similar to other competitors in the market. Notably, the camera block has made room for a total of four camera lenses, instead of the standard three. The top left notch in the photo remains empty, raising speculations that it may be reserved for a laser autofocus sensor. The altered design could be a result of a more compact device with limited space for a longer camera bar. According to reports, the internal display of the Pixel Fold 2 will be smaller and closer to a square shape. This development deviates from the original design, which was appreciated for its ability to open up to a large screen with sufficient horizontal space for tablet-like software. The shift in design may disappoint those who value the tablet-like experience from foldable devices. Conversely, for those who prioritize applications displayed from side to side when the device is unfolded, the larger screen may be more appealing. Considering the scarcity of Android tablet apps, a square-ish foldable may offer greater practicality. Despite the potential performance issues associated with curved foldable devices, the Pixel line needs to uphold its ambitious vision, as issues continue to persist across these devices.

The previous model concealed the camera within the bezel, resulting in a larger bezel. It is important to note that the design may undergo changes prior to production. Android Authority states, “The phone is still in the early stages, so it is unclear whether this is the final build,” indicating that this leak is not typical for Pixel phones. In many cases, the initial glimpse comes from CAD files obtained by case makers, signaling that the design has been finalized for production. This could be an exploratory phase to determine the design direction. These changes deviate from the favorable features of the Pixel Fold 1, and an updated design is eagerly anticipated. Another report from Android Authority suggests that the Pixel Fold 2 will skip the Tensor G3 and directly incorporate the G4 platform from Google, implying a delayed launch compared to previous models. The Pixel Fold 1 was introduced alongside the Tensor G2 at the end of June, and the Tensor G3 was released three months later with the Pixel 8. Consequently, Google’s premium phone did not have the latest Google hardware for a significant portion of its shelf life. Aligning the release of the Fold 2 with the G4 launch hints at an October release alongside the Pixel 9. A delayed launch also provides Google with additional time to reconsider its design.
