How do scammers sell products on reputable websites?

Popular online retailers like Amazon and Walmart allow independent sellers to offer their products on their platforms. While this benefits small business owners, it also creates an opportunity for scammers to sell fake or counterfeit products. This poses a serious problem for authorized dealers and sellers, as it undermines their credibility and reputation.

What types of products do scammers usually sell?

Scammers target any product they believe can generate profit, especially electronics. These high-value devices are particularly susceptible to scams. For example, scammers may attempt to sell counterfeit smartphones or tablets at a significantly discounted price. They might even advertise fake products, such as counterfeit stamps, on social media platforms like Facebook.

Scammers are willing to sell anything that they think will bring them profits, and electronics are especially lucrative targets. They take advantage of the high market demand and the high prices associated with these devices. When unsuspecting consumers come across extremely low prices, they are tempted to make a purchase without doing proper research, allowing scammers to deceive them.

Offers that seem too good to be true

For example, at the time of writing, a 2TB external hard drive typically costs less than $100. However, during our research, we found one listed for only $19.99 on Walmart’s website. Such an unbelievably low price raises suspicions.

It’s important to note that Walmart allows third-party sellers to operate on its website. When you buy a product from one of these sellers, you are purchasing directly from them, not Walmart. It’s crucial to thoroughly investigate the seller’s reputation and product reviews before making a purchase, as scammers can easily slip through the cracks.

Upon closer inspection of the $19.99 hard drive, we discovered that it only had three reviews and they were negative. Furthermore, the seller’s website featured a wide range of unrelated products, indicating a lack of focus on electronics.

While some consumers might be tempted to take advantage of the low price, it’s essential to exercise caution and not be swayed solely by the price tag.

What factors should you consider when shopping online?

When shopping online, there are several factors to consider to ensure a safe and legitimate transaction. Here are some tips:

Read reviews

Reviews can provide valuable insights into the legitimacy and quality of a product. If reviews are scarce, ambiguous, or overwhelmingly negative, it’s best to proceed with caution and explore other options, even if it means paying a higher price.

Consider the price

While occasional sales and discounts are common, an unusually low price compared to other retailers can be a red flag. If a product is significantly cheaper on one site but nowhere else, exercise skepticism and avoid impulsive purchases based solely on price.

Check the seller’s website

The seller’s website can provide valuable information about their credibility. If you’re specifically looking to purchase an electronic device, choose a seller specializing in electronics or with a dedicated electronics department. Avoid sellers who offer random products alongside electronics. Additionally, check for customer reviews on the seller’s website to gauge their reputation and customer satisfaction.

Use Fakespot to detect fake reviews

Fakespot is a useful tool that employs artificial intelligence (AI) to identify and analyze fake and fraudulent reviews on popular e-commerce platforms like Amazon, eBay, Walmart, and Best Buy. It assigns a credibility grade (A-F) to reviews and displays the changes made after removing fake reviews. Fakespot is available as a browser extension or mobile app.

Kurt’s Key Takeaway

Recognizing the severity of these scams, the government has implemented the Integrity, Notification, and Fairness in Online Retail Marketplaces for Consumers (INFORM Consumers) Act. This law aims to enhance transparency and accountability in online marketplaces by requiring them to collect, verify, and disclose specific information about third-party sellers. It also empowers the FTC and individual states to enforce the law and penalize violators.

Nevertheless, major retailers should take additional measures to prevent scammers from selling on their platforms. We must remain cautious while shopping online and conduct thorough research. With luck, the INFORM Consumers Act will incentivize retailers to prioritize customer protection.
