Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., stressed the importance of not excluding individuals from public conversation for using the term “genocide” to describe Israel’s actions in the Middle East. During an interview on “Meet the Press,” Ocasio-Cortez pointed out that a significant number of Americans believe that the term “genocide” is relevant to Israel’s actions, and she emphasized that it is not appropriate to exclude someone from public discourse for using this term. She also noted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has lost public support.
Ocasio-Cortez was asked to share her thoughts about her colleagues accusing President Joe Biden of supporting genocide, including fellow progressive Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich. Ocasio-Cortez responded by stating that many young people are appalled by the violence and the indiscriminate loss of life. Furthermore, she mentioned that the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to take all necessary measures to prevent genocidal acts against Palestinians in Gaza, highlighting the significant challenges faced by Gazans.
Ocasio-Cortez and other progressives have been criticized for drawing parallels between Israeli treatment of Palestinians and Apartheid South Africa and expressing their support for Palestinians. Members of the progressive “Squad” have been accused of being too lenient on Palestinian militants. Ocasio-Cortez, an advocate for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict, has condemned Hamas’ attacks in strong terms and has emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution.
