Rig 600 Pro Series Gaming Headset Review: A Great Value

Rig 600 Pro Series Gaming Headset Review: A Great Value
September 18, 2023

I’m often amazed by Nacon’s Rig series of gaming headphones. The Rig 600 Pro series falls into the category of pleasant surprises. It offers the same functionality and comfort as other wireless models, like the Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 2, SteelSeries Arctis 1 wireless, and HyperX Cloud Stinger 2 wireless, but at the same price it also supports Bluetooth, which is usually a more expensive feature. Only the Corsair HS55 Core Wireless is in a similar price range with Bluetooth support.

The Rig 600 Pro comes in two versions, one for Xbox (the HX) and one for PlayStation (the HS), but both versions work with the Nintendo Switch, PC, and any platform with Bluetooth audio, all priced the same.

  • Dual support for Bluetooth-2.4GHz wireless

  • Very bright

  • Controlling the settings is only available through the phone app

  • Only three settings for header size

  • There is no 3.5mm connection

  • Mic just fine

Even though the Rig 600 Pro feels light at only 240 grams, it does come across as somewhat plasticky. The built-in ear loop design adds some sturdiness to the headband, but the three-position adjustment can be a bit tricky to get right. However, despite this, the headband and earcups offer sufficient padding and a comfortable fit.

The Rig’s signature design is the three-position, on-ear design, but the flip-out/flip-in-flush mic is innovative.

The updated pop-up mic design of the Nacon Rig 600 Pro follows the trend of other Bluetooth headphones and folds neatly over the left ear. However, it lacks the convenience of built-in microphones that allow for hands-free phone conversations. Despite this, I personally prefer the fixed, non-removable mic over detachable ones. It takes some time to get used to the position of the mic, but once you do, it works well. One improvement I would appreciate is the inclusion of a wireless dongle for 2.4GHz connectivity. Having long microphones close to your mouth can be a change, so the Rig microphone’s fixed position may take some adjustment. Additionally, without visual confirmation, it’s easy to doubt if the microphone is turned on when speaking.

The microphone is curved in the left ear and in the front.

On the right earcup, there are no controls. The left earcup houses the power, volume, multi-function, and mode buttons (for switching between Bluetooth, dual connection, and wireless USB, labeled as Game mode). There is also a USB-C connector for charging. The buttons are small and may be a bit hard to press quickly, but their placement is memorable. The mode button, which is used to cycle between different modes, is located near the top of the earcup.

Settings for the Rig 600 Pro can be controlled through the app, regardless of the platform you’re using. The app allows you to adjust the mic gain, mic monitoring, EQ presets, and other settings. One useful feature in the app is the Tests feature, which allows you to check if all the buttons and the microphone are working properly. However, some users may find it inconvenient to have to use the app for controlling settings, especially if their phone is not readily available.

The audio quality of the Rig 600 Pro is not exceptional, but it is good unless there is background noise. The headset uses noise-canceling technology to reduce background noise while keeping the sound clear and focused. However, the noise-canceling cannot be turned off. If there is no audio playing, the sound is clear.

The buttons are small and hard to find quickly without looking.

The audio profile of the Rig 600 Pro is balanced, but it may sound a bit muffled. It is optimized for gaming chats and audio, which tend to have a mid-to-high frequency range. There is a bass boost preset that enhances the low frequencies, but it can be adjusted to personal preference. There are also presets for FPS games and chat emphasis.

The HX version of the Rig 600 Pro comes with a temporary activation code for Dolby Atmos. Enabling Dolby Atmos improves the audio experience even further, providing stability and detail regardless of the audio content. The surround sound is impressive, although distinguishing between front and side channels, particularly the rear channels, can be a bit challenging. However, it’s clear that using Dolby Atmos enhances the overall audio experience.

The battery life of the Rig 600 Pro is rated at around 18 hours with 2.4GHz wireless and 24 hours with Bluetooth. This should be sufficient for most users, especially if you charge the headset regularly. You can also use the headset while it’s charging, but you still need a wireless connection.

In comparison to the Corsair HS55, which has had reported issues with its wireless mic, the Rig 600 Pro offers solid performance and excellent value for money.
