Robitussin products recalled nationwide due to microbial contamination

January 25, 2024

The producer of Robitussin, Haleon, is recalling eight lots of its cough syrup due to microbial contamination in a voluntary action announced on Wednesday.

Haleon stated in its announcement that there have been no reports of any negative events associated with this recall.

The recall pertains to six lots of Robitussin Honey CF Max Day Adult, 4 oz. and 8 oz., and two lots of Robitussin Honey CF Max Adult, 8 oz.

One lot of the 4 oz. daytime cough syrup, which will expire on Oct. 31, 2025, is being recalled under the code T10810. Additionally, five lots of the 8 oz. daytime cough syrups, with expiration dates of May 31, 2025, under the codes T08730, T08731, T08732, and T08733, as well as an expiration date of Sept. 30, 2025, under the code T10808, are being recalled.

The two lots of nighttime cough syrup being recalled, with expiration dates of June 30, 2026, are under the codes T08740 and T08742.

Haleon has advised individuals with these products to discontinue use immediately, and has stated that it is directly informing distributors and customers about the microbial contamination and providing guidance on how to return the recalled products.

The potential consequences of consuming the contaminated product could be particularly severe for individuals with compromised immune systems, for whom use of the affected product could result in severe or life-threatening adverse events like fungemia or disseminated fungal infection.

“For non-immunocompromised consumers, who are the most likely users of the product, life-threatening infections are unlikely. However, the possibility of an infection that may require medical intervention cannot be completely ruled out,” the statement added.

Haleon urged consumers to reach out to their healthcare providers with any concerns and to report any “adverse reactions or quality issues” to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
