Russia Calls Armenian Ambassador for a Meeting to Discuss ‘Unfriendly Actions’ – The Moscow Times

September 14, 2023

Russia has summoned the ambassador of Armenia on Friday to discuss what it considers to be “unfriendly steps” taken by Yerevan. These steps include conducting joint military drills with the U.S. and expressing increasing concerns over Russia’s role in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

These actions have raised tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan regarding the disputed territory, prompting warnings from the Kremlin against conducting drills with the U.S. government. Historically, Armenia has been a strong ally of Russia, but it has recently become more critical of Russia’s peacekeeping efforts in Nagorno-Karabakh.

In a statement, Russia’s Foreign Ministry expressed its disapproval of the Armenian leadership’s recent actions, including allowing U.S. military drills on Armenian soil, the visit of the Armenian Prime Minister’s wife to Kyiv, and Armenia’s decision to join the International Criminal Court.
