Samsung Galaxy AI won’t be available for devices released before 2023, and hardware isn’t the sole reason

The new Galaxy S24 series introduces numerous AI features to Samsung’s One UI Android skin, and these will be available on some older devices. However, in a recent interview, Samsung has confirmed that Galaxy AI will not be available on anything released before 2023, and therefore, it will not be compatible with those devices. The new “Galaxy AI” on the Samsung Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra includes a range of AI-powered features such as using AI for photo editing, transcribing and translating audio recordings, creating text summaries, and translating phone calls in real-time across all devices. Samsung specifically stated at its launch event that Galaxy AI will be available on some older devices, including: Galaxy S23, S23+, S23 Ultra, S23 FE, Tab S9, Tab S9+, Tab S9 Ultra, Z Fold 5, and Z Flip 5. Notably missing from the list are devices released before 2023, such as the Galaxy S22 series, Fold 4, Flip 4, and several others. In a statement to TechRadar, Samsung’s Head of Customer Service, Patrick Chomet, explained that Galaxy AI will not be rolled out to any devices before the Galaxy S23, for now. He noted that Samsung aims to ensure that its AI activities can be fully supported by mobile performance, which encompasses CPU and GPU capabilities. Chomet added that the company wants to first ensure the quality and functionality of the content, monitor how customers use these features, and improve performance, before shipping Galaxy AI to secondary devices like the S23, S23 FE, Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5, and Tab S9 to analyze their performance. However, Samsung’s limitation of Galaxy AI to newer devices doesn’t seem to be solely due to hardware capabilities. Chomet hinted that there might be a need for background work in the cloud, particularly for Google’s Gemini models, which could potentially involve additional costs. The Samsung Galaxy S24 series is available for pre-order starting at $799, with pre-orders coming with double savings, up to $750 in merchandise, and up to $150 in bonus credit. Customers can also get an extra $50 off their Samsung.com purchase by using affiliate links.
