Rachel Décoste traveled to Benin in 2018, hoping to learn more about her ancestral roots. Little did she know that asking a stranger for directions would lead her to meet the love of her life. Within two weeks, Rachel and the stranger, Honoré, were engaged. Despite their short time together, they were committed to making their relationship work, and Honoré eventually immigrated to Canada to be with Rachel. Today, they are happily married and raising their son together.

Rachel’s journey to Benin was fueled by her desire to learn more about her heritage. As a descendant of enslaved Africans, she had submitted her DNA to an ancestry site and discovered that she had roots in several West African countries, including Benin. She embarked on a solo trip to explore these countries and connect with her ancestral past.

During her time in Benin, Rachel asked a stranger for directions to a historical site. Little did she know, this simple encounter would change the course of her life. The stranger, Honoré, offered to accompany her to the site on his motorcycle. They spent the day together, and Rachel was drawn to Honoré’s kindness and warmth.

Over the next few days, Rachel and Honoré continued to spend time together, exploring Benin and getting to know each other. They had deep conversations about their lives, values, and dreams. Despite their cultural differences and the short amount of time they had known each other, they felt a strong connection.

As Rachel’s trip came to an end, she made the decision to follow her heart and pursue a relationship with Honoré. She returned to Canada, quitting her job and preparing for Honoré’s eventual immigration. They stayed in touch, and their love grew stronger with each passing day.

Honoré and his son eventually moved to Canada, and Rachel and Honoré got married. They now live in Ottawa, where Rachel works as a diversity and inclusion expert and Honoré is pursuing his studies. They are also raising their son together and run a business selling pajamas with African prints.

Their love story is a reminder that it’s never too late to find love and follow your heart. Rachel’s journey to Benin taught her the importance of embracing opportunities and taking risks. She encourages others to seize life’s opportunities and not be afraid to pursue their dreams.
