On Friday, an asteroid the size of a skyscraper will pass within 1.7 million miles of Earth. Don’t worry, though – there is no chance of it hitting us as it will be seven times further away than the moon. According to NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies, the space rock is estimated to be between 690 feet and 1,575 feet across, making it comparable in size to New York City’s Empire State Building or Chicago’s Willis Tower. This asteroid, discovered in 2008 and designated as 2008 OS7, won’t come close to Earth again until 2032, when it will be 45 million miles away. The harmless flyby is just one of several encounters happening this week. On Friday, three much smaller asteroids, each no more than tens of yards across, will also pass by harmlessly, followed by two more on Saturday. Finally, on Sunday, an asteroid roughly half the size of 2008 OS7 will swing by at a distance of 4.5 million miles.
