Struggling with the mental health effects of multiple sclerosis

Coming to terms with the impact of multiple sclerosis (MS) on my life has been a challenging battle for me, especially as it has led to mental health issues. The beginning of this year has been particularly tough as I find myself in a new situation where I am no longer employed due to the increasing mobility limitations caused by MS. Losing my career in the security industry, a job that required me to be physically active for long hours, has been a difficult adjustment. This change has forced me to reevaluate many aspects of my life.

I realized that I needed support to cope with the effects of my MS and sought help from my general practitioner (GP) to address my low feelings. Unfortunately, the waiting time to see a counselor was quite long, which made the situation even more challenging. I turned to my wife, Lisa, for support, and together we explored ways to face and embrace this new phase of life. She reminded me of the positive aspects of my life and expressed how proud everyone was of me. Her encouragement helped to restore the confidence I had lost.

Although I can no longer work in the security industry, I have found new ways to stay engaged and productive. Since being diagnosed with MS, I have started a podcast and created a website and social media accounts to raise awareness about the disease. These endeavors have given me a renewed sense of purpose. I have also been dedicating more time to my hobby of playing computer games as a means of relaxation and escapism from real-life challenges. With the weather improving in the U.K., I am looking forward to spending more time on another favorite hobby of mine – gardening.

As I reflect on my journey, I am acknowledging the positives in my life and feeling a sense of accomplishment for not succumbing to the difficulties brought on by MS. Speaking openly about my emotions has been crucial in maintaining a positive outlook. By allowing myself to confront my feelings rather than suppressing them, I have been able to counteract negativity and fill myself with genuine positivity.
