Alexander Stubb, the former prime minister of Finland, has topped the first round of the country’s presidential election, securing 27.2 percent of the votes. Following closely behind is Pekka Haavisto, a former foreign minister, with 25.8 percent. They will face off in the second round on February 11. Jussi Halla-aho, a nationalist, came in third with 19 percent. The voter turnout was 71.5 percent.

The upcoming run-off on February 11 will determine the next president of Finland. The country’s new role within NATO, following its alignment with the Western defense alliance after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, has made this election particularly crucial.

Alexander Stubb expressed modesty in his victory, stating, “We made it to the final, but the competition will only begin now,” Former foreign minister Haavisto, a human rights defender and potential Finland’s first openly gay president if elected, emphasized the need to reach out to supporters of candidates who did not make it to the second round.

The role of Finland’s president involves spearheading foreign and security policy, representing the country at NATO meetings, and serving as the commander-in-chief of the Finnish Defence Forces. All three leading candidates have shown support for Ukraine and advocated for strong measures against Russia.

Stubb and Haavisto have taken a more centrist approach in their campaigns, while Halla-aho has maintained his right-wing conservative stance. The latter is seen as a polarizing figure within Finland, attracting both fervent supporters and firm opponents. The war in Ukraine significantly influenced voters’ decisions, with many recognizing the importance of selecting a leader capable of navigating the challenging international landscape.

The impending change in leadership is notable, as incumbent Sauli Niinisto, who served two six-year terms, will step down. Niinisto was known for his ability to maintain close relations with Russia, earning him the moniker “the Putin Whisperer.”

The final round of the election and the subsequent appointment of a new president will be pivotal for Finland, especially as it continues to navigate its dynamic role within the international arena.
