Updated, February 8, 2024, 10:20 a.m. PT: Krafton’s latest financial report suggested that Subnautica 2 is centered on multiplayer gameplay, causing concern among fans. However, The Unknown Leaders were quick to address this in a blog post, clarifying that the game is not geared toward the masses and explaining their vision for the game. They described the game as the “multiplayer follow-up to the original snowball-based IP,” emphasizing its exploration of ocean worlds using Unreal Engine 5’s stunning visuals and offering multiplayer capabilities for up to four players. The game will feature missions and replays. The developers also specified that the game will continue to receive support similar to the two previous Subnautica games. They asserted that the game will not focus primarily on multiplayer and that players can enjoy it as a single-player experience. The release of the Early Access is not anticipated in 2024, but more details will be shared later in the year. Subnautica, initially released in 2018, was followed by Sub Zero in 2021. IGN’s review of Subnautica awarded it with a 9/10, praising its underwater threats and compelling sci-fi narrative. Sub-Zero was also commended for its story and gameplay improvements. The developer also acknowledged that the game support takes inspiration from successful single-player games such as Hogwarts Legacy and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Empire.
