Biotech researcher Lauren “Ren” Ramlan from MIT has managed to make the computer game Doom operate using gut bacteria. Although the game is not visually running, it is running (albeit slightly) inside a cell wall constructed from E. coli bacteria, in an image measuring 32×48. Ramlan stated in their paper that “To run Doom, all one needs is visibility and power,” in reference to Doom operating on a digital display for a pregnancy test. It takes 70 minutes for the bacteria to illuminate one frame of the game and another eight hours to return to its initial state, resulting in approximately nine hours per frame.
