Trump brand faces more setbacks

Nordstrom. Neiman Marcus. TJ Maxx. And now, Sears and Kmart.

Sears Holdings, the parent company of Sears and Kmart, has announced that it will remove 31 Trump-branded items from its website.

The decision to pull these products is part of Sears’ plan to focus on its “most profitable items,” according to Sears spokesman Brian Hanover.

Hanover stated that the Trump Home line of furnishings was taken off the website, though they are still available for purchase through third-party vendors online. Neither Sears nor Kmart carried these items in their physical stores.

A search of the Sears and Kmart websites did not yield any Trump Home products, aside from those sold by third-party vendors.

Sears spokesman Chris Brathwaite released a statement on Monday, distancing the company from any political controversy and emphasizing that many Trump-branded products are still accessible through third-party sellers.

“Certain products were removed from our websites that included a very small number of Trump products,” Brathwaite said. “The headlines do not accurately represent our business or the specific brand of products we offer through our marketplace sellers.”

Brathwaite also stated that Sears prefers to concentrate on its business and “leave the politics to others.”

Sears is the latest retailer to stop selling products bearing the Trump name.

Earlier this month, Nordstrom (JWN) decided to discontinue carrying Ivanka Trump’s clothing and accessories line, citing brand “performance” rather than politics. In response, President Trump criticized the department store on Twitter. Nordstrom’s stock rose 7% in the two days following the tweet.

Other retailers have also distanced themselves from Ivanka Trump’s brand.

Neiman Marcus removed the brand landing page from its website and declined to comment on whether it will continue carrying Ivanka Trump products in stores or resume online sales in the future.

TJX Companies (TJX), the parent company of TJ Maxx and Marshalls, recently instructed workers not to promote the first daughter’s brand in stores.

Last week, retailer Belk announced plans to remove Ivanka Trump’s products from its website, although they will still be available in flagship stores.

Ivanka Trump’s clothing and accessories line has experienced declining sales in recent months.

According to retail analysis firm Slice Intelligence, online sales of her brand dropped 26% in January compared to the previous year. Slice studied the brand’s sales on five online stores: Nordstrom, Amazon, Zappos, Macy’s, and Bloomingdale’s.

Taylor Stanton, Slice’s marketing and communications manager, referred to last month’s sales figures as a “return to reality” after a surge in late 2015. Analysts noted that the brand’s decrease in performance was unusual given the increase in 2016 online sales in the apparel and accessories category.

The Ivanka Trump brand has defended its performance.

Rosemary Young, senior director of marketing at Ivanka Trump, told CNNMoney last week that the brand experienced “significant year-over-year revenue growth in 2016” and is continually growing.

“We believe that the strength of a brand is measured not only by the profits it generates but also by the integrity it maintains,” added Young.

Retailers such as Bloomingdale’s, Amazon (AMZN), Lord & Taylor, Macy’s (M), and Zappos continue to carry Ivanka Trump products.

Ivanka Trump has taken a leave of absence from her eponymous company since her father became president. Although she has no official role in the administration, she is expected to have a voice on issues like women’s empowerment and child care.
