On Thursday, Ukraine announced that its forces had regained control of a village near the war-torn city of Bakhmut in the eastern Donetsk region. This comes after months of a determined offensive against entrenched Russian positions.
In June, Kyiv launched a counteroffensive against Moscow’s forces in the south and east of the country. This involved bolstering their arsenal with Western weapons and mobilizing assault battalions.
Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar shared the progress on social media, stating, “We are advancing in the Bakhmut sector. The enemy is attempting to reclaim lost territory on the northern flank, while we are making headway on the southern flank. Additionally, we have good news – Andriivka is now under our control. We are consolidating our positions.”
Russian forces seized Bakhmut, a town that was home to approximately 70,000 people, in May. The battle for Bakhmut was one of the most protracted and violent clashes of Russia’s invasion. However, Ukrainian forces swiftly launched a counterattack on the northern and southern flanks of the city and have been steadily gaining ground since.
Andriivka, with a pre-war population of less than 100 individuals, is situated approximately 14 kilometers (9 miles) south of Bakhmut.
