In a recent development, Google has introduced the Gemini app, an upgrade from Bard AI, for Android users. However, using the Gemini app means replacing Google Assistant on your phone without an option to switch back. While Gemini has potential, it is currently slow and relies on Google Assistant for some functions. Therefore, existing users who are satisfied with Google Assistant may not find it necessary to make the switch. The question arises – Is it time to completely replace Google Assistant with Google Gemini? With the release of Gemini, users can access the AI through their phone’s web browser, but using the app means losing the functionality of Google Assistant. When you sign in to Gemini, your phone’s assistant will automatically switch from Google Assistant to Gemini, leaving no option to use both at the same time. This change will be evident when summoning the assistant through long-press, swipe, or Hey Google hotword, as it will activate Gemini instead of Google Assistant.
Unlike Google Assistant, Gemini does not support the same level of functionality. It is referred to as an ‘experimental AI assistant’ by Google, and once the app is installed, it prompts the user to choose between Assistant and Gemini. If the user opts for Gemini, it becomes the default assistant, while declining would still present the Gemini page upon opening the app. Even after changing settings, there is no way to use the Gemini app without losing access to Google Assistant.
This presents a significant shift rather than the removal of Google Assistant. The release of Gemini follows the recent deactivation of Google Assistant Driving Mode in February, indicating a potential transition in the functionality of Google Assistant. Although Google Assistant has been a fixture since 2016, the rise of large language models (LLMs) suggests the arrival of more advanced AI to replace the existing ones. Gemini is a step in the right direction but falls short in comparison to the capabilities of Google Assistant. It excels in handling complex queries but is slower in processing them compared to Google Assistant. Additionally, for some tasks, it still relies on Google Assistant.
While Google Gemini shows promise, it is not yet equipped to replace Google Assistant. Users can access all Gemini features via the Gemini website on their mobile phone or laptop, raising the question of the necessity to download the app. Although there are potential benefits to adopting Gemini, it falls short in replacing Google Assistant. Perhaps Google should reconsider its approach before expecting users to embrace Gemini as the primary assistant.
