What We Know About Judas, the Spiritual Successor to BioShock

What We Know About Judas, the Spiritual Successor to BioShock
February 2, 2024

It has been a decade since the last BioShock game was released and despite no official sequel being announced, fans of the franchise have something to look forward to. Judas, an upcoming shooter, bears a striking resemblance to a BioShock game and is being developed by Ken Levine, the creator of the BioShock series. The game was first unveiled at the 2022 Game Awards and has been highly anticipated ever since. Here’s all the information we have on Judas, the successor to BioShock from Levine’s studio, Ghost Story.
Is there a release date for Judas? The closest indication we have is a statement from the CEO of Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick, to IGN in February 2023, mentioning that the game is expected to be launched in March 2025. Judas will be available on PC via Epic Games Store and Hot Air, as well as on Xbox and Playstation 5. There is no information about a Nintendo Switch version at the moment, but if Judas is released in 2025, we may see rumors about a Switch release in the future. Judas made its debut at the 2022 Game Awards with a trailer focusing on setting up the gameplay. The most recent trailer, shown in January 2024 during State of Play, provided an in-depth look at the game and teased the story of Judas. So, what is the story of Judas? The storyline of Judas is still shrouded in mystery. It appears to have a more scientific tone compared to the BioShock games and is reminiscent of System Shock. The PlayStation Blog’s State of Play post contains a description of the game and its central setting: “The corridors of the Mayflower, a space-faring city whose citizens are taught to spy on each other and tear each other apart over the slightest offense. Where machines dominate all aspects of business, art, and government. The ship’s captains tried to turn you into something you are not: a model citizen. And you started a destructive riot to destroy it.” What about the gameplay of Judas? The State of Play trailer demonstrates that Judas will be a first-person shooter with many of the trademarks of a BioShock title. The protagonist is seen holding a gun in their right hand while their left hand wields various powerful attack weapons reminiscent of BioShock’s Plasmids. Players can look forward to controlling both guns and powers that interact with the environment and enemies in novel ways. In essence, if you’re a fan of BioShock, Judas is likely to resonate with you.
In the same PlayStation Blog post, Levine also revealed that Judas will present a story unrelated to his previous game, stating, “We want you to make choices and drive the story forward. You, as Judas, will be the catalyst for every event in the story as you get to know new characters – and change them – in ways you have not experienced in our games.” While waiting for Judas to be released (hopefully in 2025), you can always revisit and return to the world of Rapture.
