WELL, NEBRASKA IS NOT IN THE PATH OF TOTALITY FOR TOMORROW’S ECLIPSE, BUT THAT’S NOT STOPPING SOME FROM SOME YOUNG NEBRASKA RESEARCHERS. THANKS FOR JOINING US. I’M ROB MCCARTNEY. I’M JULIE CORNELL. TEAMS OF NEBRASKA STUDENTS ARE IN SOUTHERN ILLINOIS AND SOUTHEASTERN MISSOURI PREPARING FOR THAT ECLIPSE. AND THAT’S WHAT THEY’RE DOING. THAT’S WHAT THEY’RE DOING. RESEARCH. THEY’RE LAUNCHING BALLOONS. INTO THE AIR, AND KETV NEWSWATCH SEVEN’S JESSICA PEREZ SHARES SOME OF THE THINGS THESE STUDENTS ARE HOPING TO LEARN. JESSICA, THERE ARE 53 ENGINEERING TEAMS ACROSS THE COUNTRY PARTICIPATING IN THE NATIONWIDE ECLIPSE BALLOONING PROJECT. IT’S A NASA LIKE ACTIVITY MEANT TO COLLECT DATA THROUGH SCIENTIFIC BALLOONING. STUDENTS LOADED THEIR GEAR AS THEY PREPARED FOR AN EIGHT HOUR DRIVE TO CARBONDALE, ILLINOIS, LOOKING FORWARD TO RESEARCH INVOLVING BALLOONS. I LIKE TO THANK GOD FOR TAKING ME HERE. THEY DIDN’T BELIEVE IN US, BUT GOD DID. UNL FRESHMAN LUKE DOTY WILL GET TO WITNESS THE TOTAL ECLIPSE FIRSTHAND AND LEARN FROM THE PHENOMENON ON ALL OF OUR HIGH ALTITUDE BALLOONS, WHICH ARE WEATHER BALLOONS THAT WE LAUNCH INTO THE STRATOSPHERE. THEY GO UP TO ABOUT 100,000FT IN THE AIR AND AND WE ALWAYS HAVE TRACKING EQUIPMENT ON THEM. WE HAVE SENSORS THAT MEASURE TEMPERATURE, PRESSURE, HUMIDITY AND ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS, DUTIES ON THE TRACKING TEAM, WHICH WILL SET UP AT SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY TO SEARCH FOR DEFLATED BALLOONS. ANOTHER TEAM WILL LAUNCH THREE OF THEM NEAR PERRYVILLE, MISSOURI. ONE BALLOON THEY’LL BE SEARCHING FOR WILL MEASURE HOW ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION CHANGES DURING THE DIFFERENT STAGES OF THE ECLIPSE. THE SECOND ONE WILL CREATE A FUN ART PROJECT. A BOX HAS BALLOONS ON IT WITH FULL OF PAINT AND A BUNCH OF CANVASES INSIDE. AND AS THE BALLOON RISES, THE PRESSURE IS GOING TO CHANGE AND MAKE THE BALLOONS EXPAND AND AND THEY’LL POP AND MAKE A PRETTY PAINTING. UNL PROFESSOR KAREN STELLING SAYS THIS TRIP IS AN INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY. WE’RE REALLY EXCITED THAT THE STUDENTS HAVE THE CHANCE TO LEARN. WE’RE EXCITED THAT WE’RE ACTUALLY GATHERING DATA THAT NASA IS INTERESTED IN. DOTTIE JUST HOPES THE WEATHER IS IN HIS FAVOR. HOPEFULLY IT’S NOT CLOUDY. I’D LIKE TO SEE THE TOTAL ECLIPSE OF MY OWN EYES. BUT EVEN EVEN IF IT’S NOT THE BALLOONS WILL GO UP. THEY HAVE CAMERAS AND WE’LL SEE IT FROM ABOVE THE CLOUDS. THE STUDENTS WILL BE STREAMING THEIR LAUNCH ON YOUTUBE. IF YOU WANT TO WATCH IT TOMORROW, THEY’LL BE LIVE AT 12:30 P.M. YOU CAN FIND THE LINK UNDER THIS STORY AT KETV DOT COM.
